A perfect blend of maple and apple in an individual turnover
Dough:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 Tbsp. oats
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 cup butter, cut into pieces and chilled
- 2 Tbsp. sour cream
- 2 Tbsp. maple syrup
Filling:
- 5 Gala, Cripsin, or Granny Smith apples
- 4 Tbsp. maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- Butter to dot top of turnovers
- 1 egg, mixed with 2 Tbsp. cold water, for brushing
Oat Crumble Topping:
- 1/4 cup oats
- 2 Tbsp. all-purpse flour
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp. butter
- Dough:
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine flour, oats, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Cut butter into small pieces and add to flour mix. Mix until it is the texture of coarse meal.
- Stir sour cream and maple syrup, and add to dough, mixing until it just comes together. Chill the dough for 15 minutes.
Filling:
- Peel and slice apples. Toss with maple syrup and cinnamon.
- On a lightly floured surface, cut dough into eight pieces and roll out to 1/4-inch thick. Slide rolled discs onto a greased baking sheet.
- Place apples and all the syrup into the center of the pastry. Dot with butter.
Oat Crumble Topping:
- Combine oats, flour, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Work in butter until crumbly and sprinkle over turnovers after brushing with egg wash.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until the topping is brown and the filling is bubbling.
- If you don't care to have oats in the turnover and/or the topping, please feel free to omit it. A very simple topping is just to use the brown sugar and sprinkle with cinnamon before placing in the oven.
