Ingredients Baking Instructions

Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 Tbsp. oats
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup butter, cut into pieces and chilled
  • 2 Tbsp. sour cream
  • 2 Tbsp. maple syrup

Filling:

  • 5 Gala, Cripsin, or Granny Smith apples
  • 4 Tbsp. maple syrup
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • Butter to dot top of turnovers
  • 1 egg, mixed with 2 Tbsp. cold water, for brushing

Oat Crumble Topping:

  • 1/4 cup oats
  • 2 Tbsp. all-purpse flour
  • 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. butter
  1. Dough:
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Combine flour, oats, baking powder, and salt in a bowl. Cut butter into small pieces and add to flour mix. Mix until it is the texture of coarse meal.
  3. Stir sour cream and maple syrup, and add to dough, mixing until it just comes together. Chill the dough for 15 minutes.
  4. Filling:

  5. Peel and slice apples. Toss with maple syrup and cinnamon.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, cut dough into eight pieces and roll out to 1/4-inch thick. Slide rolled discs onto a greased baking sheet.
  7. Place apples and all the syrup into the center of the pastry. Dot with butter.
  8. Oat Crumble Topping:

  9. Combine oats, flour, cinnamon, and brown sugar. Work in butter until crumbly and sprinkle over turnovers after brushing with egg wash.
  10. Bake for 30 minutes or until the topping is brown and the filling is bubbling.
  11. If you don't care to have oats in the turnover and/or the topping, please feel free to omit it. A very simple topping is just to use the brown sugar and sprinkle with cinnamon before placing in the oven.
