I would like to make decorator icing with something other than shortening. I prefer creamcheese or butter but cannot get the consistency for piping. Any suggestions?

i use this recipe for all my frostings..My kids don't like canned frostings. I add everything I want for this frosting recipe, and use "tasting" it along the way as my guide. Everyone raves about it. I do add a TBSP of butter to it and not much salt,...Add to taste is what I do...even cocoa and sugar as necessary.

no for the amounts you have given, how much food coloring would you suggest for decorating a whole cake with bright color?

When you putin food coloring you have to adjust it to the color you want it. So it could be 3 drops or 9 drops of the color.

My only suggestion would be to use either lemon or orange flavoring.

This is a good recipe. I alter it by using water instead of milk since a lot of people are lactose intolerant also because the icing will not spoil especially in hot weather. It doesn't make any difference in the taste. Sometimes I add a teaspoon of almond for good flavor, or lemon. Amond is my favorite. Lemon bleaches and keeps the icing a clear white. I also add a few shakes of salt to make it more palitable. This icing is versital, tasty, has a good consistency and lends well to decorating.

Is the almond extract in addition to the vanilla?

Sounds simple to make. What is the consistency?
