Ingredients Baking Instructions
  • 1 box Duncan Hines French Vanilla Cake Mix
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1/3 cup of vegetable oil
  • 2 cans Duncan Hines Vanilla Frosting
  • Red, Blue, and Yellow Food coloring or icing tints
  • 2-3 tubes black piping gel
  1. Mix the cake mix, buttermilk, eggs, and vegetable oil in a large bowl. Line 24 cupcake tins with cupcake liners. Fill the cups to 2/3 full and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cupcake comes out clean. Allow cupcakes to cool before frosting.
  2. Separate the first can of icing into three bowls. Tint one bowl red, one bowl yellow, and one bowl blue.
  3. Completely cover the tops of the cupcakes with the white, untinted frosting, smooth the frosting, and put them in the fridge until the icing is set.
  4. Trace a beach ball pattern into the set icing using a toothpick. There should be a small circle in the center and six sections of color (see picture).
  5. Frost each section on the cupcake. There should be red, blue, and yellow section on each cupcake with white in between the colors. Smooth the frosting with a toothpick.
  6. Use the piping gel to trace the lines on the cupcakes.
  7. Let stand until frosting hardens.
