These are such a family favorite, I always wonder why I never encounter them anywhere else but at home. I like them plain myself, but if that's too boring for you, add chocolate chips or chopped walnuts!
- 3/4 cup butter
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts and/or chocolate chips (optional)
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy; beat in 1 egg.
- Sift dry ingredients together (flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, cloves). If desired, stir chopped walnuts/chocolate chips into the dry ingredients.
- Mix the dry ingredients alternately into the creamed mixture with the applesauce.
- Shape the dough into long rolls and chill for easy handling.
- Slice thinly and bake on buttered baking sheets for 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
- If you're lazy, you can skip the rolling, chilling, and slicing, and just make these as drop cookies. They'll still be just as good!
