Recipe Description
These are such a family favorite, I always wonder why I never encounter them anywhere else but at home. I like them plain myself, but if that's too boring for you, add chocolate chips or chopped walnuts!

Ingredients Baking Instructions
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. cloves
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts and/or chocolate chips (optional)
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy; beat in 1 egg.
  2. Sift dry ingredients together (flour, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, cloves). If desired, stir chopped walnuts/chocolate chips into the dry ingredients.
  3. Mix the dry ingredients alternately into the creamed mixture with the applesauce.
  4. Shape the dough into long rolls and chill for easy handling.
  5. Slice thinly and bake on buttered baking sheets for 12 minutes or until lightly browned.
  6. If you're lazy, you can skip the rolling, chilling, and slicing, and just make these as drop cookies. They'll still be just as good!
