Ingredients Baking Instructions
  • Make (2) boxes of Duncan Hines White cake mix according to direction on box.
  • (2 to 3 Duncan Hines frosting and/or Butter Cream frosting.
  • I used both Duncan Hines frosting and Butter Cream frosting.
  1. Separate batter into 6 bowls. Using Wilton's food coloring mix in each bowl the following colors; purple, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
  2. Line 6 round cake pans with wax paper and spray Pam in pans.
  3. Put each color in cake pan(s).
  4. Cool cake.
  5. Using either Duncan Hines white frosting or make butter cream frosting (whichever you prefer) frost bottom layer (purple), put blue on top of purple then frost continue in order that I mentioned above.
  6. Frost all 6 layers thinly, put in refrigerator till cold, then put one more layer of frosting.
  7. *It would be a good idea to use skewers or straws inserted in the layers to keep the cake from tilting.

Can also do this with cupcakes, so cool for the kids. Just follow the directions on the box for time & temp :)

You can also do them in a jelly jar. Use unflavored jello instead of eggs. Don't frost so it can be sealed for 10+ years. It is delicious and stays so moist. Just put a warm lid and band on when they come out of the oven and while they cool, they will seal!

I already got my idea for it before she came up with her rainbow cake so if I come up with one here, it won't be that I took her idea. I hope I get the effect I want.
