I just mixed up this cake and stuck it in the oven. I couldn't find cherrie filling so I used 2 cans of apple pie filling. I added cinnammon to the yellow cake mix. I mixed the cake batter according to the directions. Will let you know how it turns out.

It's not a dump cake if you mix it like it says on the box. The idea is to
dump stuff in there and the stick of butter helps it make the cake, along with the juice in the pineapple. Been making these for years and years.

I melted the butter and poured if over the cake mix and pecans. Easier and more consistent. As soon as it comes out of the oven, while still hot, sprinkle with a little brown sugar. Don't do it before you bake, or the sugar gets really hard and crystallizes. Definitely good with French vanilla ice cream!

This turned out more like a crumble. Definitely did not look like the picture. Seems that's a common complaint with this Duncan Hines website. Overall though, the dessert is very tasty.

I agree. Please, Administrators to the website of Duncan Hines, check the pictures and recipes. People, be consistent!

Agreed, the section that states to sprinkle the cake mix over the cherries should be to make the batter and pour it over the cherries. That will get you the picture above everytime. :) *keep an eye on the time though 30-45 min maybe

It looks scrumpdilioushess and sooooo fast and easy. sunni, if yours worked, that's great. I think I'd be inclined to do what you did, too, but I'm going to have to think about it. It looks like it works and wonder how many other variations one could do with the basic idea.

I made this cake, but instead of pouring right out of box,II made the cake according to directions on box and then poured it over the fruit mixture. Looked just like the picture. Anyone try it this way?

I only like fresh Pineapple, so I'm using Cherries and Apples. I melted 1 cup of butter and poured it over the pecans. it smells great, and hopefully it will taste as good as it smells. BTW, my friend makes this recipe w/Classic White Cake Mix.

I love this recipe, it is easy and tastes great. However mine does not look like the picture either.
I find it interesting that the pictures on this site do not always go with the directions given to achieve the results of the pictures.

I made this cake and followed Angicraws's way by making the cake mix and then pouring over the fruit, instead of just pouring out of the box.. Came out as picture

Did you drain the pineapple when you used the cake already mixed and not dry?

Just do as directions say....sprinkle dry cake mix over cherry layer and
then pecans and butter. I guarantee you it will turn out. We made this
years ago while husband was in military. We loved it.

I was thinking the same thing. The recipe says sprinkle cake mix over the cherries. Do you do the dry mix or make the cake mix according to the box? This cake looks pretty high for just sprinkeling over the cherries. It rose pretty high. Let me know before I make it. Looks so good!!!!

It seems that both ways work: Dry,is a cobbler, and prepared the cake, is as shown in the picture. I'll try preparing the cake with the instructions of the package, and I'll tell you the results

I used blueberry pie filling instead of cherry. Going to try it with a butter pecan cake mix next time. very good warm with vanilla icecream.

When you use this variation, are you still including the pineaple and juice?
