I think I missed something. Why is "Double" in the recipe title?

The cake mix is already seasoned with pineapple.

I really don't want to turn the cake over on a huge serving platter or a baking sheet. UGLY. So I have split the cake into two round pans. This way it is easier for storing, carting somewhere or even handling.

I just made this and it came out beautiful! I wish I had one more can up pinapple though, 8 slices was not enough but it does not look incomplete. I like things crammed :) It was done in 45 minute I think 50 minutes it would have been a bit overdone.

Actually, I make this now with pineapple chunks, NOT slices, and cherries. It's so easy to eat! And still delicious....

I am concerned since I substituted pineapple juice instead of the water and read afterwards not to! Well, it's in the oven as we speak. What is the concern? I know not to add it to Jello, but if you have the answer - tell me! TY
Comment by: StarTrek1701 (no discussions) on May 1, 2012 at 04:18 PM
I do this also and it works just fine. Regarding Jello, you can add canned pineapple. It is fresh pineapple that you cannot put into Jello. I have no idea what the difference is other than the canned version is heated to pasturize the product.

Tried this recipe today because when I went to make it, realized as the rest of you, that there was no recipe for it and came here. I followed it almost exactly, but again, like many of you, part of the water I replaced with the pineapple juice. And baked it at exactly 32 minutes. Came out great!

As a first-time baker, i made a cardinal mistake. I baked the cake just using the recipe on the box without coming to the website first. When I was ready to what I thought was just to frost the cake with a pineapple mixed frosting, i then decided to visit Food network, and then this site to findout that I was supposed to put the fruit mixture on the bottom of the pan before baking. HELP!!!!!

Create a file folder on your hard drive (I call mine "Recipes") and save the recipe there for future reference. Just an idea.

I was very disappointed in having to get on the computer to get the recipe. Duncan Hines needs to remember two things.....not everyone has access to the computer, and if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Duncan Hines removed the recipes along time ago - I miss them but the truth is I've learned to look for cake mix variations before I go to the store, it wasn't easy but I'm pretty smart so I could be retrained. The upside is that I have a great source for new favorites and at work I'm the got to for cakes, all thanks to Duncan Hines... Twenty cakes at work a year and never a duplicate and always a happy birthday person! Of course over the last year or so I've also learned to keep cake making basics in my microscopic pantry. Cherry, pineapple, brown sugar, vanilla, instant pudding, cherry pie filling - yeah. I keep it on hand at all times. Remember, change is good for the brain cells. LOL

I was also disappointed about not having the recipe on the box. The picture on the front of the box should be what is in the box and not a variation. Hopefully Duncan Hines will consider the comments. I also am not a fan of having to wade through a language other than English. Maybe the foreign translations could be posted on the website and not on the box. No disrespect intended to other nationalities but let's reserve the packaging to English.

The "genius" who took the recipe off the box probably got a promotion because the result is that tons of traffic is driven to the website. My iPad was sitting on the table and was on so it was easy for me to get the recipe BUT it still ticked me off and made me feel manipulated. The photo implies that the recipe is included. I didn't expect it to be a kit, but I did expect the recipe to bend on the box. I think that the lack of it engenders a lot of I'll will especially since it has been on the box for ever.

The "genius" that took the recipe off the box has made every one of us get online and go to the Duncan Hines website to look it up! Not to mention getting us to provide our name, email, etc. so that we can create an account and add our comments. This makes me want to buy another brand just for the principal of the matter! Just for the record, it would only take up a few lines of space on the box to note a few tips, like that we need 1 stick of butter + 1 cup of brown sugar; and need to bake it for 50 minutes. Having at least that on the box would be great, Mr. Hines.

BUT - I have always used the pineapple juice as part of the water requirement. I wonder why they say not to. Everyone loves my version.

I have to say, I bought this cake mix several weeks ago anticipating the recipe & all ingredients to be included. My mistake on expecting the addition of the ingredients. The box really wasn't heavy enough. However, when you see the picture on the front of the box, there has always been that recipe on the box for that item. I did not see the need for a second language of instructions for the basic cake mix, there was also plenty of room on the side of the box. Or, rather than advertise for another recipe, use that space for the recipe that's pictured on the front of the box!
You'll make a lot more customers happier. I'm going out to the rest of the items to actually make the Upside Down cake this week. Being disabled I don't get out shopping that often. I'll write back after I've had the cake.

It may be because I've made Pineapple Upside Down cakes before and only needed the recipe because I forgot how much butter to use, but I think these negative reviews are unfair. No where on the box does it say it's a Pineapple Upside Down Kit. It says it's a pineapple supreme cake mix. There is a difference my friends. Actually, my husband purchased this package, I would have bought the Yellow Cake Mix and added the pineapple juice in place of the water. What genius decided to eliminate the recipe from the box?!?! That person should be FIRED! After searching...handing the box to my husband for him to look...I decided to go online. We run an online business but not everybody has a computer (or perhaps if they do, it wouldn't be turned on when they go to make the cake). I knew to buy cherries, pineapple, brown sugar...but what about people who don't bake very often or who have never made this? They will look at the picture on the box and think everything is included (since there's no recipe on the box). I only make this a couple of times a year but next time I think I'll look for a different brand. (BTW, I created an account here just so I could leave my comments. this is the best pineapple upside down cake ever! follow the baking times on the box, not the 50 minutes stated on the recipe. i made mine in a 13" by 9" and was ready in 35 minutes. this is so good, a friend of ours who is a professional baker wants the recipe. i am more than happy to share it. it would be nice if this was printed on the cake box. also, i'm glad i had all the ingredients on hand as i thought the topping was included in the box. should make that clearer. will be making this on a regular basis.

I love your Pineapple Upside Down Cake recipe - however, what a disappointment to find that the recipe/ ingredients were not on the box!! One of the little joys (& there are FEW joys here) of grocery shopping is looking on the back of the cake mix boxes & finding an interesting recipe to make and surpise my family with. I can have a new recipe, buy the ingredients & know the work involved all while grocery shopping! It's a huge inconvenience to have to look up the recipe online at home then go back to the grocery store. Looks like you have many complaints about this same topic - please put the recipes back on the boxes! Thank you!

Does anyone know if you can freeze the pineapple upside down cake? This recipe is delicious but we can only have small portions because of special diets. Thanks.

My husband buys (or used to buy until I decided to use this) frozen pineapple upsidedown cake. I'm baking one right now and will be cutting it and freezing portions for him. He was putting his frozen, store-bought in the microwave for 30 seconds, so we'll try that with this. Hope it works.

I'm with everyone else on here, no instructions, no shopping list, and had to join here to leave a note here... anyhow, one note. This recipe states to bake for 50 mins but the box states 32-35. I checked after 35 and my cake was done so be sure you check it often.

I noticed the 50min also and I was thinking to myself..that can't be right. Yeah 32-35min sounds about right.

I make a double layer pineapple upside down cake. I used the same ingredients except I used crushed pineapple. First I open and drain two cans of crushed pineapple. I split the melted butter and brown sugar in two 9" round pans and stir until mixed well. Next I place the cherry halves on top of the sugar and butter in each pan arranged a little spaced, working from outside to inside of pans circle pattern with pan. It's like 12-14 cherries around the outer. Then I cover both with the crushed pineapples. After the pineapple is placed I split the cake mix and pour each half on top of the pineapples. After its baked I let cool then carefully flip one and then flip the other on top of it.

I am going to attempt your recepe for my parents 60th anniversary (Lieu Theme). Did you consider doing one of the 9 in cakes with sliced pineapple (top layer) and the other with the diced (bottom layer)? If so, why did you do both with crushed pineapple?
Comment by: xman334 (1 discussion) on Aug 3, 2011 at 06:11 PM
It's funny but when I was a kid in school we use to have a piece of crushed pineapple upside down cake for lunch sometimes. So when I started making them a few years ago I thought hey... I wonder could I make a double layer one. I did and that's how I've made them ever since. I don't know if it makes a difference with the moisture of the cake if you use crush or slices but it's good and moist with crushed. To be honest I never made one with slices or diced.

This worked out great! Thank you for the great idea as I wanted to make something a little different. Had to take a picture to show it off. I used four large eggs instead of three since these cakes tend to get soggy faster. Only used one can of pineapple tidbits and it was plenty. I always use real butter for the topping. Took about 40 minutes to bake for me. Got a little nervous turning out the last layer. Loosened sides of both layers before turning over. Waited about 8 minutes to turn out second layer so I could use my bare hands and not have the potholders get in the way. It came out easily. I use stainless steel pans so tilted the pans with melted butter to coat 1/2 way up sides. Personally I prefer Duncan Hines cake mixes over Betty Crocker. Except for the angel food which IGA brand wins hands down.

Ok, I cant take it anymore...when you buy a cake and it is the size and weight of a NORMAL cake box....you have to know it dosent include a heavy can of pineapple or a cup of brown sugar! OMG, pineapple is the FLAVOR of the cake. If you buy a lemon cake do you expect it to have lemon frosting in the box? No, you know you have to buy it sepeately. Im not trying to be mean, but seriously. With that said, I was disapointed that the recipe was missing from the box. I had to google it to find it. You can use a regular yellow cake mix and flavor it with the pineapple juice...or you can use the juice and the pineapple FLAVORED cake mix and make it even more yummy!!! I adore this cake and its always a hit. Again, Im not trying to be mean...just trying to make a point :c)

I agree with you too, but the picture on the box is the pineapple upside down cake, but it doesn't give you instructions anywhere on the box on how to make it. I now I sign on to this website to find out I now need brown sugar and I do not have this at home. If they are going to picture a cake on the box (which is WHY I bought the cake) then they should include directions on the box on how to make it!!!

I agree!! The recipe USED TO BE ON THE BOX and when you were in the store you could pick up the rest of the ingredients to make the pineapple upside down cake. I was really pissed when the recipe wasn't on the box anymore. Duncan Hines needs to put that recipe back on the box.

I agree as well!!! Couldn't believe the recipe wasn't on the box. Never dawned on me to make sure it was there, just assumed since it used to be on box in the past. I knew I needed the pineapple slices, butter, etc. but never worried about copying the recipe off the box since it's always been there. Kinda like the Honey Maid graham cracker box always has the recipe for their graham cracker crust. Live and learn I guess. I hope Duncan Hines has someone reviewing these messages - PLEASE PUT THE RECIPES BACK IN THE BOXES!!

I agree with these ladies - too many actually so CS or QC should take note). After buying this brand for the past 30 years ??? DH dropped the ball big time on this: no can of pineapple rings in the box, no recipe on the box, misleading photo on the box... Next time, another brand will be purchased. Has the economy really forced every company to go so cheap? Anyway, once I went back to the store and purchased all necessary ingredients, the pineapple upside down cake was a hit, at an added expense of my time. PLEASE PUT THE RECIPES BACK IN THE BOXES AND THE PINEAPPLE BACK IN THE BOXES!! Thanks.

I wanted to bake the cake that was on the box for a barbeque tomorrow. I didn't trust the box, kept reading for recipe, ingredients. I picked up the pineapple and cherries I GUESSED I needed that, but I don't have any brown sugar and it is too late to go buy some. The cake the box makes should be showcased on the box and if you showcase a different cake, requiring additional ingridients SAY SO. Ttell me what else I need to duplicate the cake you are advertising to entice me to buy your box, so I can make this delicious looking cake. Disappointed

Add me to the list of disappointment baker's regarding lack of recipe on the box. It's sad enough that you market it as pineapple cake without including the ingredients, but terrible to find no recipe on the box. I knew it was brown sugar and butter, but the amounts eluded my memory. My 4-year-old grandson used this mix to make his mommy a peach upside down cake. He had the patience of a saint when I had to come to this site to look up the recipe. You can do better, Duncan Hines!

My son's favorite, one of mine, too. I use a yellow cake mix, prefer the plain ones. I've made it so many times I don't bother to measure the bottom part, usually 9X10 glass baking dish. The ones with the round pineapple slices and maraschino cherries are the prettiest, but my son likes it with crushed pineapple (large can, drained, use juice for part of the water). I like real whipped cream you whip yourself, but the family likes it either way. Always use real butter for taste. Be very careful turning it over as you can get burned with the hot syrup and has to be done right out of the oven. Get the best grip with pot holders you can, and flip it away from you and not toward. juliescafe, I don't make cupcakes too often but suggest you don't use the papers,, maybe grease the sides or spray with flour added cooking spray. Then try it again maybe? Sometimes a bit sticks so I patch it while hot, but it might help to run a knife around the sides; some of these things you have to do what works best for you. Yes, drain the pineapple well. I wouldn't do minis; rather I have some oversize cupcake pans and regular size, think I'd use my oversized ones and not fill them too full. That picture on the left and box I'd say is a perfect one.

I just made pineapple upside down cupcakes, and they turned out pretty well! the problems were they did not have the carmelly (sp) type topping . i used butter and brown sugar in the cupcake pan and then crushed pineapple with the cherry any ideas on how to get the buttery brown sugary goodness to come out on the cake. wondering if I needed to drain the pineapple more? would love any hints and do you think mini cupcakes would work?

I made this according to directions the first time but truthfully no one wants a two layer pineapple upside down cake. So this time I cut the mix in half. I measured it out and the whole mix is 4 cups. I used 2 cups mix with 1/4 cup (half a stick) of butter, 2 eggs and 1/2 a cup of water. For the topping I used 1/4 cup butter(1/2 stick) and 3/4 cup of sugar. I melted the butter in a rod iron 9 inch skillet and then sprinkled the sugar on top. Then I put the pineapple( I used the kind in heavy syrup) and the maraschino cherries in the bottom of the pan and covered the fruit with the batter. I baked it for 35 minutes at 350. It was wonderful. I am very happy that I figured out a way to make this with half a mix. I am going to try this with different kinds of fruit. I really like the taste of this mix.

Hi Kaththee,
FYI about the skillet you used...it's a wrought-iron skillet. Thanks for your "half a recipe" but that sounds like a lot of work!! And after hearing that no one really wants a 2 layer pineapple upside down cake, (I wondered about that, too), so I'm for now I'm going to make a regular single layer upside-down cake instead!! Next time maybe I'll try a double with a pineapple-crazed friend:-)

Hi rubrat55,
I just got home from the store having gone there looking specifically for a box of Pineapple Upside-Down Cake mix, like I was able to find the last time I had a craving for it, maybe going on a year ago!! I have half a fresh pineapple I saved for this that is so-o-o honey-sweet that to do it justice I just HAVE to use it in an upside-down cake!! Like you, the only thing there was to be found in the cake aisle today was Pineapple Supreme. I really hope the Pineapple Upside-Down Cake is not discontinued, but even if it is, I'll use the Supreme mix and add my own goodies!! You remember what I remember; The upside-down cake version DID come with pineapple and brown sugar, while the "Supreme" version is pineapple flavored cake mix only!! Anyway, I bought the Supreme as that is HALF the battle, and I figured I could always add my own butter, dark brown sugar, and my exquisite fresh pineapple in the bottom of the cake pan before adding the mix on top. I can't WAIT to smell that pineapple, butter and brown sugar scent wafting from the oven, and I'm on my way to the kitchen NOW to make it!! Bliss!!:-)

Most people that have an allergy to eggs means they cant eat eggs by themselves. I know plenty of peole who still eat cake with 2-4 eggs in the batter and they are fine wtih no reactions. It's so diluted.

I love this recipe, i always eat it fresh out of the oven, so good when it's warm!!! the only thing that upset me was they took the recipe off the box and replaced it with spanish instructions, hello we are in america!!! please put the recipe back on the box!!!

It also upset me coming home with all the ingredients I could remember from the past recipe, and then realizing that the recipe is no longer in the box. But they haven't taken the recipe off cause of the spanish. Do ya'll blame it on the spanish just because you can't understand it?
The Double Pineapple Upside Down recipe was on one of the sides of the box, never on the back (where the original guidelines for the ordinary baking were printed). Now, the recipe's space in the side has been used to advertise a "Creamy Home-Style Frosting" by Duncan Hines, according to my box.

Yeah, I remember being surprised the first time I bought this years ago that there was no pineapple inside AND I had to add brown sugar and butter, to boot! This time I was surprised that the recipe had gone.. why don't they print it on the mix envelope inside? I would pay an extra quarter for that - had to find the website and print it out. What about people who don't have computers?
Re the Spanish - let's all be thankful that this group of immigrants can read! My grandparents not only couldn't speak English, but had to be taught to read and write when they came.
I like the dual printing - I'm picking up a little Spanish along the way.

Everyone is complaining about this. I've seen over 30 complaints and talked to others as well. Why didn't they put it on the side instead of an advertisement for frosting that we wouldn't use for this cake anyway? Looks like Duncan Hines is more concerned about advertising than providing information to it's customers. No problem with the spanish, totally understand, but they could have put it elsewhere...even inside the box for goodness sake!

That is how I ended up here on this site , I was looking for the recipe on the side of the box , however It doesnt bother that it has the recipe in spanish also being my husband is from mexico and our daughter at 9yrs old speaks both , however they could have put the recipe back on the side of the box also , or one side english , th eother side spanish , I mean hello this is AMERICA shouldnt we treat everyone as we would want to be treated ? tenga un bien dia! < have a nice day =)

They could even put it inside the box..with a note on the outside indicating that. This was annoying to have to find the recipe on the net.

Why does the recipe for the pineapple upside down cake , say "do not use pineapple juice" instead of water? I always have,. I s there something I should know?
Comment by: sammi323 (1 discussion) on Feb 20, 2011 at 06:43 PM
I also use the juice... and I use crushed pineapple and no cherries... it's always been received well..

If you are counting calories or sugar requirements, a definitely strong suggestion. Any natural fruit juice has sugars. It might also affect the baking times or consistancy (may never fully cook and be soggy). The only way to verify this would be to actually try it. But those are the thoughts that immediately come to mind. Hope this was helpful.

I'm with you, I have ALWAYS used the juice. Why waste it? Besides it tastes better. To the best of my knowledge of years of using the juice for water it's never changed the cooking time or consistancy. So I too want to know what the reason is besides more sugar.

Why did they remove recipe from box ? SILLY !
Comment by: gsites (no discussions) on Apr 8, 2011 at 08:29 AM
No kidding! They have the picture on the box but no recipe. Good thing I remember it but what about those who don't and aren't access to a computer to get it. I did notice however that the store carried another brand that had the recipe on it's box. Duncan Hines beware! Some shoppers may buy the other brand instead because the recipe is there for them. I know I was tempted.

I am also very unhappy about them taking the recipe off the cake mix. Have made this several times & everyone loves it. I started using chunk pineapple instead because it makes it so much easier to cut & eat, but still looks great!

Giving this a try today...but was very disappointed that they didn't have this recipe on the box of the cake...when it is showing on the front of the box. I always use applesauce for any of the butter or oil in mixes...so wish me luck....trying to keep some of the calories out of it.

Exact same thing just happened to me. I purchased the cake mix and the can of pineapple slices, went home and discovered that the recipe is no longer on the box. Very disappointed. They apparently removed it to make room for the regular recipe in Spanish. They should not have the picture on the front without the recipe included! Boxes usually say "Serving suggestion" when the box doesn't include everything you see in the picture - this one didn't.

We always used a different mix that provided a small can of crushed pineapple, and my husband brought this one home by mistake. He (and I) assumed that it would contain the pineapple. It doesn't, and we can't figure out why the mix would be called "Pineapple Upside Down" cake when there is neither pineapple inside nor instructions for how to make a pineapple upside down cake on the box!
Comment by: h1palmer (no discussions) on Jan 30, 2011 at 10:07 AM
It's not called "Pineapple Upside Down" cake. It's called "Pineapple Supreme".
Comment by: mkhaman (no discussions) on Feb 4, 2011 at 12:13 PM
I agree. Why do they have a picture of a pineapple upside cake on the box front. The recipe should be on the box. I think at one time it was.
Comment by: RicsPenguin (no discussions) on Feb 5, 2011 at 02:48 PM
I agree with h1palmer. The mix is called Pineapple Supreme. The picture is part of marketing...just like when they put a picture on the box that has icing on the cake...noone expects icing to be in the box...besides everyone knows that the cake is prettier with pineapple rings than it is with gross crushed pineapple from a box. I always keep extra pineapple in my cupboard for cases like this. A prepared woman makes a happier man. A happier man makes for a happier woman.

They used to have a samll can of crushed pineapple in the box of the cake. It is false adversting. All it is yellow cake mix and you have to add the juice of the pineapple to make it
Comment by: ddysgrl_1 (no discussions) on Apr 30, 2011 at 11:29 PM
The only pineapple cake mix in the store today was one called "Pineapple Supreme Premium Cake Mix". I knew there wouldn't be anything but cake mix inside the box because it DIDN'T say "Pineapple Upside-Down Cake Mix"! Also, the fact that the Pineapple Supreme Cake Mix box has a "Homestyle Frosting" recommended on the side - and right then I KNEW this wasn't Upside-Down Cake as one would NEVER ruin an upside-down cake with frosting!!!!! I must say I expected the box to have that little area under the baking time on the back where it used to suggest additions and expected mention of pineapple upside-down cake and how to use this mix to make that. I was very surprised that there wasn't any mention of it!! I agree; Please put the how-to recipe back on the box!!

I have been using this recipe for years and it always turns out great. Have to use a 13x9 in pan and pineapple slices because everyone wants a full 'ring' squared slice. We never have leftovers of this cake!

My 85 yr old father LOVES this cake - his mother used to make a similar one when he was a boy. To make it just like my grandmother, I add walnut pieces arouund the pineapple rings and cherries. It adds a delightful nutty flavor to the cake.

This cake was YUMMMM. I changed the recipe a little. I used fresh pineapple in chunks and dried tart cherries. The cherries reconstituted during baking and were plump. I reduced the brown sugar to 1/2 cup. I also baked it in a 10 X 10 baking dish for 40 minutes making it higher. It is a hubby pleaser.

The only thing my father-in-law requested for Christmas (in lieu of any other gift) was for me to make him a Pineapple Upside-Down Cake, because his mother used to make them for him when he was a child. When I asked him if he wanted me to wait until Christmas Day, he told me, "No, I want it today!" LOL! So I made him one using this recipe. It was awesome! I would like to add that we like lots of "topping" so I increased the brown sugar to 2 cups, but did not increase the butter because I didn't want it too greasy. That might be too sweet for other people, but it was perfect for us! It was a big hit and he considered it one of the best Christmas gifts he has ever received!

try a can of crushed pineapple as an extra topping. Just spread it over your pineapple rings and cherries. I love pineapple and this just makes the whole cake all the better!

Makes a beautiful, moist cake with little effort. I have made it in a bundt pan and in two smaller pans... For fun, use a 8 x 8 pan and a 9" round pan - place the pineapple slices in a tic tac toe like pattern on both cakes - results in a fun X & O cake!

This is my all time favorite cake. It always turns out good and tastes wonderful. I sometimes use crush pineapple it gives it a candied taste. I love whipped cream on top. These are great cake mixes.
