Ingredients Baking Instructions
  • 2 boxes Duncan Hines chocolate cake mix
  • 1 cans Duncan Hines vanilla frosting
  • 1 can Duncan Hines chocolate frosting
  • Blue and black food coloring
  • Strawberry Starburst
  • Cocoa nibs
  • Chocolate-covered sunflower seeds
  • Kraft mini marshmallows
  • White decorative sugar
  • Other items: cupcake tin, mini cupcake tin, cupcake liners, pastry bag
  1. 1. Prepare and bake full sized and mini cupcakes according to the instructions on the box. Allow the cupcakes to cool before proceeding.
  2. 2. While the cupcakes are cooling, color your frosting. Add black coloring to the chocolate. Add blue to just a small amount of the white frosting (for the eyes).
  3. 3. Take two mini marshmallows. Cut just the corner off of one to create a flat surface (this is the nose) and cut the other in half across the diagonal (the ears.) Dip the two sticky halves of the ears in the white sugar.
  4. 4. Using frosting, secure the ears and nose on the top and lower third of the mini cupcake.
  5. 5. Using a pastry bag with the "leaf" tip, layer white frosting on the bottom half of the cupcake and on the nose. Using a pastry bag again (if you have two - otherwise save this step for the end), layer the black frosting on the top of the head and around the outer rim of the ears.
  6. 6. Using the blue frosting, put a small dab for the eyes and stick the sunflower seeds into it. Put the cocoa nib on the end of the nose. Cut a pink Starburst in half and roll it into a log. Put an indentation down the middle with your finger. This is the tongue. Stick it in below the nose.
  7. 7. Frost the big cupcake with white and black frosting, on the front half and back half, respectively, using the same texturing method as the head.
  8. 8. Attach the head onto the base, using more frosting, if necessary, as glue.
  9. 9. Enjoy!
