Scrumptious Chocolate Caramel Brownies

Karyn Masters Recipe shared by:

I didn't think these brownies could get any better, but adding the new Flavor Mixes into my batter made a world of difference. These brownies are very unique in the sense that they're made with Duncin Hines German Chocolate cake mix. This is my most requested recipe at any social gathering and they're really quick and easy to make.

Ingredients

  • 1 box (18.5 Ounce) Duncan Hines German Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 1 packet of Duncan Hines® Frosting Creations™ Mocha Flavor Mix
  • 1 cup Finely Chopped Pecans or Walnuts
  • 1/3 cup Evaporated Milk
  • 1/2 cup Evaporated Milk (additional)
  • 1/2 cup Butter, Melted
  • 60 whole Caramels, Unwrapped
  • 1 packet of Duncan Hines® Frosting Creations™ Caramel Flavor Mix
  • 1/2 cup Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips

Baking Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together cake mix, Mocha Flavor Mix, chopped pecans, 1/3 cup evaporated milk, and melted butter. Stir together until totally combined. Mixture will be very thick.
  3. Press half the mixture into a well-greased 9 x 9 inch square baking pan. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove pan from oven and set aside.
  4. In a double boiler, melt caramels with additional 1/2 cup evaporated milk. When melted and combined, take off heat and mix in Caramel Flavor Mix and pour over brownie base. Sprinkle chocolate chips over the caramel.
  5. Turn out remaining brownie dough on work surface. Press it into a large square a little smaller than your pan. Use a spatula to remove it from the surface, then set it on top of the caramel and chocolate chips.
  6. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes. Remove pan and allow to cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate for several hours.
  7. Enjoy!

more of a question, but i noticed on the last DH cake i made, the 'you will need' items were a little different than in the past.... the box said: 1 cup water, whereas previous boxes said: 1 1/3 cups of water. What prompted this change? My cake didn't rise as previous cakes, not sure if the water was the difference or something else. thank you !

Baking tip

Baking tip

When a recipe calls for putting a product like Crisco and flour in a cake pan to prevent sticking, I replace the flour with sugar or powered sugar. By doing that, I can eliminate using a frosting or glaze.
