Chocolate brownies made with chopped almonds and coconut.
- 1 (21-ounce) package Duncan Hines Family-Style Chewy Fudge brownie mix
- 2 egg whites
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
- 1 cup finely chopped almonds
- 1 cup flaked coconut
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Grease bottom only of 13x9-inch pan.
- Prepare brownies as directed on package for cake-like brownies.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes, or until set.
- Place egg whites in medium mixing bowl.
- Beat at high speed with electric mixer until foamy and double in volume.
- Beat in sugar gradually, beating until meringue forms peaks.
- Add almond extract; fold in almonds and coconut.
- Spread over warm brownies.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 12-14 minutes, until meringue is set and lightly browned.
- Cool completely in pan; cut into bars.
- Spread the meringue to the edges of pan to prevent meringue from shrinking.
