Applesauce may be used to replace oil with one exception: butter recipe cakes. We suggest you follow the lower-fat recipe directions on the back of the box.

I have always substituted either applesauce, yogurt, sour cream and pudding (in the snack cups) for the oil in all of my cakes. The ratio is the same and each time they have turned out fantastic! :D

I ordered boxes of the Duncan Hines Snack Size Chocolate Chip cookies. Unlike the Family Size, this recipe calls for butter/margarine. I wouldn't have purchased these (on Amazon) if I had known this as I like to use applesauce to make the lower fat recipe. Why is the snack size recipe different and what can I do to make that recipe lower fat?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I buy Duncan Hines because it has the applesauce instead of oil recipe on the box. I can't taste the applesauce in the white and only the barest hint in the devil's food or milk chocolate. I tend to have strong taste buds, so if I can't taste it, most people won't be able to either.

Today I used crushed pineapple to substitute for oil in the pineapple cake mix and it worked great!
