Recipe Description
After frosting your cake, dip a palette knife or small spatula into hot water and wipe. Then slide the heated knife over the cake, it'll melt the icing just enough to make the surface smooth and shiny.

How do you get Duncan Hines icing to crust?

Also, when frosting cupcakes like in the picture above, a quicker way would also be holding the cupcake upside down and quickly dipping the top into the frosting. That way you get total coverage of the entire top and would look better. But the frosting has to be slightly thicker and not runny, otherwise they would all run down to the sides. The same way they frost or ice donuts. The spatula tip is good for icing a layered cake and not for cupcakes.

To get a really smooth top and sides of a layered cake when icing, is to make the icing crust first, then using a dry white and new foam paint roller. It is very effortless, NO mess since there is no hot water required for dipping the spatula.

This is an excellent tip and works well. I started using it after taking a few cake decorating classes and not being able to get that smooth look when frosting my cakes.
